CNG Fuel Tanks for Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles
Determining Which Tank Is Right for Your Car or Truck
Selecting the right type of CNG fuel tank is critical to a properly functioning CNG bi-fuel system. Cylinders range in diameter from 10 to 24 inches, are 30 to 60 inches in length and hold 2.5 to 20 gasoline gallon equivalents, or GGE, of compressed natural gas.
CNG fuel tanks are made from four different materials:
- Heavy steel
- Steel liner, with fiberglass or carbon fiber hoop wrapped around the sides of the cylinder
- Aluminum liner with carbon fiber wrapping the entire cylinder
- Polyethylene liner with carbon fiber wrapping the entire cylinder
The lifespan of a tank varies based on the year of manufacture, with tanks made before 2007 lasting an average of 15 years, and 20 years for tanks made after 2007. CNG fuel tanks are the most expensive part of the conversion process, so which one you choose is dependent upon how you will use your vehicle and what is affordable to you.
